Acts 4:32-5:16 - Testing Times

Welcome & opening songs

When I call on your name, You answer; when I fall, You are there by my side. You delivered me out of darkness, now I stand in the hope of new life. By grace I’m free, You’ve rescued me, all I am is Yours.

I’ve found a love greater than life itself.

I’ve found a hope stronger and nothing compares. I once was lost, now I’m alive in You.

You’re my God and my firm foundation; it is You whom I’ll trust at all times. I give glory and praise, adoration to my Saviour who’s seated on high.

Love came down and rescued me, I thank You, I thank You.

I once was blind but now I see, I see You, I see You.

Your grace is enough, more than I need, at Your word I will believe I wait for You, draw near again, let Your Spirit make me new

And I will fall at Your feet, I will fall at Your feet, and I will worship You here Your presence in me, Jesus light the way

By the power of Your word I am restored, I am redeemed

By Your Spirit I am free And I will fall at Your feet, I will fall at Your feet, and I will worship You here, oh Lord

Freely You gave it all for us, surrendered Your life upon that cross Great is the love poured out for all, this is our God Lifted on high from death to life, forever our God is glorified Servant and King, rescued the world, this is our God

The easiest way for the children to carry on with their teaching is to go onto YouTube and type in “Hillsong Kids, online service, week 12”.

Bible Reading

Acts 4:32 - 5:16 (New International Version)

The Believers Share Their Possessions

32 All the believers were one in heart and mind. No one claimed that any of their possessions was their own, but they shared everything they had. 33 With great power the apostles continued to testify to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus. And God’s grace was so powerfully at work in them all 34 that there were no needy persons among them. For from time to time those who owned land or houses sold them, brought the money from the sales 35 and put it at the apostles’ feet, and it was distributed to anyone who had need.

36 Joseph, a Levite from Cyprus, whom the apostles called Barnabas (which means “son of encouragement”), 37 sold a field he owned and brought the money and put it at the apostles’ feet.

Ananias and Sapphira

Now a man named Ananias, together with his wife Sapphira, also sold a piece of property. With his wife’s full knowledge he kept back part of the money for himself, but brought the rest and put it at the apostles’ feet.

Then Peter said, “Ananias, how is it that Satan has so filled your heart that you have lied to the Holy Spirit and have kept for yourself some of the money you received for the land?Didn’t it belong to you before it was sold? And after it was sold, wasn’t the money at your disposal? What made you think of doing such a thing? You have not lied just to human beings but to God.”

When Ananias heard this, he fell down and died. And great fear seized all who heard what had happened. Then some young men came forward, wrapped up his body, and carried him out and buried him.

About three hours later his wife came in, not knowing what had happened. Peter asked her, “Tell me, is this the price you and Ananias got for the land?”

“Yes,” she said, “that is the price.”

Peter said to her, “How could you conspire to test the Spirit of the Lord? Listen! The feet of the men who buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out also.”

10 At that moment she fell down at his feet and died. Then the young men came in and, finding her dead, carried her out and buried her beside her husband. 11 Great fear seized the whole church and all who heard about these events.

The Apostles Heal Many

12 The apostles performed many signs and wonders among the people. And all the believers used to meet together in Solomon’s Colonnade. 13 No one else dared join them, even though they were highly regarded by the people. 14 Nevertheless, more and more men and women believed in the Lord and were added to their number. 15 As a result, people brought the sick into the streets and laid them on beds and mats so that at least Peter’s shadow might fall on some of them as he passed by. 16 Crowds gathered also from the towns around Jerusalem, bringing their sick and those tormented by impure spirits, and all of them were healed.

As we now listen to God’s word through Anne’s sermon, let us pray that God gives us listening ears to hear what He is saying to us as individuals and willing hearts to respond to Him.

As we now listen to God’s word through Anne’s sermon, let us pray that God gives us listening ears to hear what He is saying to us as individuals and willing hearts to respond to Him.

I am sure that there was a challenge in Anne’s sermon for each of us. Most of us, if not all of us, hold on to parts of our lives that we find difficult to totally surrender to God. Let us now come before Him and simple say sorry, and ask for the power of the Holy Spirit to come and fill us and enable us to totally surrender our lives to Him.

Praying through the storm

(by Ian)

Right now there are many different storms that this world is in the midst of. I invite you to join me in calling out to our God to heal the current situation within America following the terrible circumstances of the death of George Floyd.

Father God, come in your awesome power to reach the hurting corners of communities in America. Take away fear, bring justice and healing. Bring sanctuary to those who feel vulnerable and need protection. Hear the cries of injustice that are worldwide. Enable us to show compassion and to grasp the message from the servant heart of your son Jesus.

Also, as we continue to live under the shadow of the Coronavirus, bring your healing hand upon those who are suffering. Take away fears and anxieties. Give strength to those who work in hospitals and care homes. Bring wisdom to those in Government who make decisions on when to lift the current lockdown.

Come Lord Jesus, come. Amen

I am broken at Your feet, like an alabaster jar;

Every piece of who I am laid before Your majesty.

I will bow my life at Your feet, at Your feet.

My lips, so lost for words, will kiss Your feet, kiss Your feet.

Oh, the gravity of You, draws my soul unto its knees;

I will never be the same, I am lost and found in You.

May the words of my mouth and the thoughts of my heart

Bless Your name, bless Your name, Jesus:

And the deeds of the day, and the truth in my ways,

Speak of You, speak of You, Jesus.

For this is what I’m glad to do, it’s time to live a life of love that pleases You.

And I will give my all to You, surrender everything I have and follow You, I’ll follow You.

Lord, will You be my vision, Lord, will You be my guide:

Be my hope, be my light, and the way?

And I’ll look not for riches nor praises on earth,

Only You’ll be the first of my heart.

I will follow, I will follow You. (x4)

Christy introduced us to Ravi Zacharias last week through one of his final interviews. You might be interested to hear the story of how he became a Christian. Visit our testimony page to view this, and other stories of how God has worked in the lives of people in our own community. (Please send any of your own stories of how you became a Christian, or of how God has worked in, and through your own life as you've journeyed with him to either admin@haylingisland.co.uk or ckalfas@gmail.com).

Hayling Holiday Lunches

Families have been receiving Free School Meals vouchers in term time but we understand these will not be available in the summer holidays and we need to build up stock to assist them once more. Although donations of any food are welcome we are particularly in need of pasta & pasta sauces to ensure that we have sufficient for our first delivery at the end of July. These can be left at 9 St Mary's Road or 18 Chichester Avenue. If you require further information, you can view our Hayling Holiday Lunches page.

With thanks and blessings for your support.

WhatsApp Bible Study

As lockdown is likely to continue for churches for a few more months, we are launching small WhatsApp groups with the aim of helping you to connect with the church family, and to explore the text and sermon for the week deeper together. If you'd like to join one, or even if you'd like to just try one out for a week or two to see how it works, please email admin@haylingislandbaptist.co.uk

Food for thought Greg has prepared some further notes for us on the book of Acts. These can be viewed under "Resources" on our Food for Thought - Acts page.
