The example of Stephen (Part 1): Servant and witness - Acts 6

Welcome to our online service.

If you have children, we would encourage you to take a look at the children’s ministry that Ian's daughter, Rachel, and her husband, Alex, are involved in with Hillsong church. You can find the link on YouTube by entering a search for "Hillsong kids UK - week 14".

Ian, Richard and Frances will be leading us today. Please click on the links below to follow our service, starting with this short message from Richard's friend and associate, reminding us that every single person joining us today is welcome:

VERSE: Who am I that you are mindful of me / That you hear me, when I call / Is it true that you are thinking of me / That you love me / Its amazing / CHORUS: I am a friend of God, I am a friend of God / I am a friend of God He calls me friend / BRIDGE: God almighty, Lord of glory / You have called me friend.

VERSE 1: I love You Lord / Oh Your mercy never fails me / All my days / I've been held in Your hands / From the moment that I wake up / Until I lay my head / I will sing of the goodness of God / CHORUS: All my life You have been faithful / All my life You have been so, so good / With every breath that I am able /I will sing of the goodness of God / VERSE 2:

I love Your voice / You have led me through the fire / In darkest night / You are close like no other / I've known You as a father / I've known You as a friend / I have lived in the goodness of God / CHORUS / BRIDGE: Your goodness is running after / It’s running after me / Your goodness is running after / It’s running after me / With my life laid down I’m surrendered now / I give You everything / Your goodness is running after / It’s running after me / CHORUS

As a church we regularly support the Open Doors charity that aids persecuted Christians across the world. They produce regular updates related to different countries and today I invite you to follow the below link which tells an amazing story of one woman's journey of coming to know Jesus. May you be encouraged by this message:

VERSE: Come, let us worship the King of kings / The Creator of all things / Let your soul arise to Him / Come and bless the Lord our King / Lord, my heart and voice I raise / To praise Your wondrous ways / And with confidence I come / To approach Your heavenly throne. CHORUS: Come and fill this place with Your glory / Come and captivate our gaze /

Come and fill us with Your fire / That the world might know Your name / BRIDGE: For You are God / And You’re worthy to be praised / And You are good / For Your love will never end / The great I Am / You are faithful in all of Your ways.

VERSE 1: I’ve heard a thousand stories / Of what they think You’re like / But I’ve heard the tender whisper / Of love in the dead of night / And You Tell me that You’re pleased and that

I’m never alone / CHORUS: You’re a good, good Father / It’s who You are, it’s who You are, it’s who You are / And I’m loved by You / It’s who I am, it’s who I am. it’s who I am / VERSE 2: Oh and I’ve seen many searching for answers far and wide / But I know we’re all searching for answers only You provide / Because You know just what we need before we say a word / CHORUS / BRIDGE: Because You are perfect in all of Your ways / You are perfect in all of Your ways / You are perfect in all of Your ways / To us / VERSE 3: Oh this Love so undeniable / I, I can hardly speak / Peace so unexplainable / I, I can hardly think / As You call me, deeper still / As You call me deeper still / As You call me deeper still into love, love, love

This week's reading is Acts 6

Thank you, Richard, for sharing God's word with us today. We pray that we will be encouraged by it and that it will strengthen us:

Please sing along with this next song and allow the Holy Spirit to minster to you.

Intercessory Prayers

The following prayers are from Frances Blackwell:

Pray for peace in the USA and for the Black Lives Matter movement:

Pray for calm and understanding.

Jesus, thank you for your infinite love and compassion for all people, including those marred by prejudices to colour, and especially for those who face difficulties as a result of those prejudices.

Pray for our Government as we go through these difficult times of dealing with Covid-19:

Thank you, Lord, for our NHS and for the wisdom of our Scientists and MP’s.

Pray for the persecuted church:

Thank you, Lord, for all the Christians you place in these places. We pray for our fellow believers around the world who suffer for their faith.

We pray for our church family:

We pray for those who are unwell and suffering anxiety during the Lockdown. We pray especially for Vicky's inoperable pancreatic cancer and ask that you would grant her peace, healing, and freedom from pain. We pray for the doctors and nurses into whose care you have placed her - grant them the wisdom to care for her in the best way possible through this time. We also pray for peace for her family members.

Praise to you our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of Compassion, who comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort those in trouble.

May we do so in your name.

May the God of Hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him

There is power in the name of Jesus (x3) / To break every chain, break every chain, break every chain (repeat) / All sufficient sacrifice / So freely given such a price / Bought our redemption Heaven’s gates swing wide (repeat)

CHORUS: Bless the Lord, O my soul, O my soul, worship His holy name / Sing like never before, O my soul, I'll worship Your holy name / VERSE 1: The sun comes up, it's a new day dawning / It's time to sing Your song again / Whatever may pass, and whatever lies before me / Let me be singing when the evening comes / CHORUS / VERSE 2: You're rich in love and You're slow to anger / Your name is great, and Your heart is kind / For all Your goodness, I will keep on singing / Ten thousand reasons for my heart to find / CHORUS / VERSE 3: And on that day when my strength is failing / The end draws near, and my time has come /

Still my soul will sing Your praise unending / Ten thousand years and then forevermore / CHORUS / ENDING: I'll worship Your holy name / Yes, I'll worship Your holy name.

Hayling Holiday Lunches

It was a great surprise to us when the government did a U-turn this week in extending the free school meals vouchers into the school holidays. As our reason for existence is to help families who are not getting this help in the holidays we have decided to suspend our scheme for the time being. We shall make one delivery to each family of all the food we have already collected, and you have kindly given, but we shall not collect any more for the summer holidays. Paul Dennison from the Bridge Church will continue to collect for the Food Bank but he does not want collection points in the shops, preferring to collect from the churches as before. In that way he can regulate what he receives. We are still happy to receive food for the Food Bank at our home until we are back at church and even then to organise its delivery to the Bridge. In the coming months we think there will be more demand for its services as people face job losses and redundancies. As to Hayling Holiday Lunches, the government has said they will only provide vouchers for the summer and not in future holidays, (though it is difficult to see how they could withdraw them without making themselves very unpopular) so we are putting the scheme on hold and we will see what happens. In the meantime help with the one delivery at the end of July would be appreciated. David, Sarah and Sam

Garden / WhatsApp bible studies

As lockdown continues for churches we are launching small WhatsApp / garden groups this week with the aim of helping you to connect with the church family, and to explore further the book of Acts currently being preached on. If you haven't yet indicated that you'd like to join one, or even if you'd like to just try one out for a week or two to see how it works, please email admin@haylingislandbaptist.co.uk

As you meet this week, begin by praying for the Holy Spirit to guide your discussion. Read Acts 6, then give each person a chance to respond to these questions:

1. Stephen demonstrated great humility in serving God. What examples of humble service have you experienced or witnessed in HIBC?  What does humility in our lives speak of and why is it important?

2. How do we make ourselves ‘available to serve God’? How do we discern between what acts of service we wish to pursue and the acts of service God would have us pursue?

3. Sometimes giving ourselves over to the control of the Holy Spirt is interpreted as giving up control of our lives. Is that an accurate definition? How do you feel about letting God take control of your life?

4. Describe ways in which you have experienced God’s grace in your life. Why is conducting ourselves with grace, both within our church family and beyond, so important?

Close by asking for prayer needs in your group, then take time to pray for each other before you close.

Those meeting via WhatsApp will be limited to 60min. If you don't make it through all the questions, that's okay - you can complete them in your own time. Rather close off your discussion about 10min before the end so that there is time to share needs and pray together.
